Look closely. Very, very closely. In each one there’s an invisible man, usually the artist Liu Bolin himself. These are not digitally modified photographs or made by photoshop.

He is the Liu Bolin a Chinese artist known for taking photographs of himself, painted in order to blend in with the background. Liu works on a single photo for up to 10 hours at a time, to make sure he gets it just right, but he achieves the right effect: sometimes passers-by don’t even realize he is there until he moves. This series is called "Hiding In The City".

He graduated from the Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. The talented Liu Bolin says his art is a protest against the actions of the Government, who shut down his art studio in 2005 and persecutes artists.

Women have left their mark on the world, at times changing the course of history and at other times influencing small but significant spheres of our life. Marie Curie is one of the most famous scientists that ever lived. Most scientists, especially women, are fascinated by Marie Curie. In the early part of the twentieth century, when professional opportunities for women were rare, she was the first woman to obtain a doctoral degree from the Sorbonne.

Marie Curie is best known as the discoverer of the radioactive elements polonium and radium and as the first person to win two Nobel prizes. For scientists and the public, her radium was a key to a basic change in our understanding of matter and energy. Her work not only influenced the development of fundamental science but also ushered in a new era in medical research and treatment. Curie was not only the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, but when she won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, she became the first person ever to win the Nobel Prize twice.

Marie Curie, (Maria Sklodowska) was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867, the daughter of a secondary-school teacher. She received a general education in local schools and some scientific training from her father. From childhood she was remarkable for her prodigious memory, and at the age of 16 she won a gold medal on completion of her secondary education at the Russian lycée.

In 1891 Skodowska went to Paris and, now using the name Marie, began to follow the lectures of Paul Appel, Gabriel Lippmann, and Edmond Bouty at the Sorbonne. There she met physicists who were already well known—Jean Perrin, Charles Maurain, and Aimé Cotton.

She met Pierre Curie in 1894, and they married in 1895. Marie Curie was interested in the recent discoveries of radiation. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen had discovered X rays in 1895, and in 1896 Antoine Henri Becquerel had discovered that the element uranium gives off similar invisible radiations. Curie thus began studying uranium radiations, and, using piezoelectric techniques devised by her husband, carefully measured the radiations in pitchblende, an ore containing uranium. When she found that the radiations from the ore were more intense than those from uranium itself, she realized that unknown elements, even more radioactive than uranium, must be present. Marie Curie was the first to use the term radioactive to describe elements that give off radiations as their nuclei break down.Pierre Curie ended his own work on magnetism to join his wife's research, and in 1898 the Curies announced their discovery of two new elements: radium and polonium (named by Marie in honor of Poland).

During the next four years the Curies, working in a leaky wooden shed, processed a ton of pitchblende, laboriously isolating from it a fraction of a gram of radium. They shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics with Becquerel for the discovery of radioactive elements. Marie Curie was the first female recipient of a Nobel Prize, it was the first time a woman had ever won a Nobel. In 1911, Curie became the first and only woman to win a second Nobel Prize. She earned, on her own, the award in chemistry for isolating pure radium.

Marie Curie's final illness was diagnosed as pernicious anemia, caused by overexposure to radiation. on July 4, 1934, Curie died in Sancellemoz, France. Albert Einstein (1879–1955) once said, "Marie Curie is, of all celebrated beings, the only one whom fame has not corrupted."

Jagjit Singh born on February 8, 1941 is a famous ghazal singer from India. During 1970s, in India, the art of ghazal singing was dominated by well-established names like Noor Jehan, Malika Pukhraj, Begum Akhtar,Talat Mahmood and Mehdi Hassan. But the perceptions changed soon In 1976, his album The Unforgettables hit the music stores. Skeptics had their own reservations, purists scorned it but it was widely successful among listeners and the album set new sales records.

His guru in his younger days was Pandit Chaganlal Sharma. He learnt Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms of classical music of India from Ustad Jamaal Khan. He married the popular singer Chitra Singh in 1969.

He went to Mumbai in 1965 and searched for better opportunities. He never had a god-father and hence it was an uphill task to survive in Mumbai. Like any other struggler, he too had his share of trials and tribulations. He lived as a paying guest and accepted every singing assignment that came his way - be it jingles for ad films or performing at weddings and parties.

He is the pioneers of modern Ghazal singing and regarded as most successful recording artistes outside the realm of Indian film music. He has sung in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali languages. He was awarded India's third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, in 2003. Widely credited for the revival and popularity of Ghazal , an Indian classical art form, by simplifying the complex form of Ghazals in to a more simpler form of Ghazals by amalgamating Ghazal and Geet.

In 1967 he met Chitra, also a singer, while doing jingles. After a two-year-long courtship they got married in 1969. They epitomize the first successful husband-wife singing team. Jagjit Singh, with Chitra, has contributed immensely towards changing the course of this genre of music known as 'Ghazal' making it more ear friendly, melodic and enojoyable by a wider audience.

Jagjit Singh & his wife, Chitra Singh experienced dark personal tragedies. Their only son, Vivek, died in a car crash in the early 90s; his stepdaughter from Chitra Singh’s first marriage, Monica, who was a tarot card reader, committed suicide in 2009. Jagjit Singh’s personal tragedies gave his atmospheric, depressive soul-searching ghazals an emotional edge. Their subsequent album 'Someone Somewhere' was the last album with ghazals sung by both. After that Chitra Singh quit singing. Jagjit Singh's later albums, including Hope, In Search, Insight, Mirage, Visions, Kahkashan (meaning "Galaxy"), Love Is Blind, Chirag (meaning "Lamp"/"Flame") also achieved success.

His later albums named Hope, In Search, Insight, Mirage, Visions, Kahkashan (Galaxy), Love Is Blind, Chirag (Lamp), etc. have made him the top Ghazal singer in the country and a favorite among fans. An album with Lata Mangeshkar named Sajda (Offering) was a hit and sold innumerable copies. It was a classic Ghazal album. Jagjit Singh did not limit himself to just Hindi songs and has also sung many Punjabi songs.

His compositions for the TV serial Mirza Ghalib (based on the life of the poet Mirza Ghalib), remain extremely popular among ghazal aficionados. The elusive element of Ghalib’s poetry was sensitively and wonderfully brought out in the soulful compositions of Ghalib’s ghazals by Jagjit Singh. The album could veritably be called a magnum opus.

His music direction can be seen to be pioneering in changing the sound layout by adding more Western instruments while mostly retaining the traditional orchestra which includes a tablaa, dholak, bongos, sitar, sarod, santoor, flute, and harmonium, and a couple of string instruments. Jagjit Singh is also nicknamed Gazaljit Singh. In 2003, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honours.

The Jiaozhou Bay bridge is 26.4 miles long, according to Guinness World Records. It links the "eastern port city of Qingdao to an offshore island, Huangdao. The road bridge, which took four years and cost a cool £5.5billion to build, will be open for use in the New Year and is almost three miles longer than the previous record-holder, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana.

The bridge is expected to carry over 30,000 cars a day and will cut the commute between the city of Qingdao and the sprawling suburb of Huangdao by between 20 and 30 minutes. China is already home to seven of the world's 10 lengthiest bridges, including the world's longest, the 102-mile Danyang-Kunshan rail bridge, which runs over land and water near Shanghai.

One of the world's most popular political prisoners and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi Burma's pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate, has come to symbolise the struggle of Burma’s people to be free. She has spent more than 15 years in detention, most of it under house arrest. Suu Kyi is one of the world's most renowned freedom fighters and advocates of nonviolence. Aung San has spent most of her time under several house arrests and bans.

Aung San Suu Kyi has won many national and international awards including Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament in 1990, United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Jawaharlal Nehru Award from India and Rafto Human Rights Prize and was awarded the honorary Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggle against the dictatorship in year 1991.

Aung San Suu Kyi was born on June 19th, 1945, daughter of Burma’s independence hero, Aung San, in capital city of Myanmar (then Burma). She received a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from St. Hugh's College, Oxford in 1969. after spending four years in India, where her mother served as Burma's ambassador. Suu Kyi completed her formal education with a PhD from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies in 1985. Later attended graduate school in New York and worked briefly at the United Nations.

After that she married Dr. Michael Aris. The couple had two children, Alexander and Kim. During 1985-86, Suu Kyi studied at the Center of Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, as a visiting scholar. Suu Kyi completed her fellowship at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla, in 1987.

Suu Kyi felt compelled to join the Burma's pro-democracy movement in 1988 after returning to visit her mother who was in ill health. In the 1990 general election the NLD, under the leadership of Suu Kyi, challenged the ruling party and won with an overwhelming 80% majority. In September 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi, in her first political move, joined the National League for Democracy as its secretary-general. The party was pushing for political reforms in the country. Suu Kyi gave numerous speeches calling for freedom and democracy. On July 20, 1989 Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest in the city of Rangoon. Suu Kyi continues her work for human rights in Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in July of 1995, but she was not allowed to travel outside of Rangoon. The military always offered her to leave the country and settle abroad but Suu Kyi rejected. After her release Suu Kyi continued the struggle for democracy in Myanmar. This increased her popularity across the world and international political powers were compelled to intervene to resolve the issue. Though the western countries tried to put pressure on the ruling junta by curtailing economic aid, the neighboring countries continued to encourage the commerce.

In 2000 Aung San Suu Kyi was again placed under house arrest after repeated attempts to leave the capital, Rangoon, to hold political meetings in other parts of the country. In 2002, she was released from house arrest and with freedom to travel around the country. The release was part of a deal negotiated by UN Envoy on Burma. She was again arrested and placed behind bars in May 2003 after the Depayin massacre, during which up to 100 of her supporters were beaten to death by the regime's cronies.

On May 30th 2003 members of the USDA attacked a convoy of vehicles Aung San Suu Kyi was travelling in. Following the attack, Aung San Suu Kyi was held in detention, and then placed back under house arrest. During this period of detention, conditions were much stricter than in the past. Her phone line was cut, her post stopped and National League for Democracy volunteers providing security at her compound were removed in December 2004.

Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. The decision of the Nobel Committee mentions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 1991 to Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar (Burma) for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights. Suu Kyi announces that she will use $1.3 million prize money to establish health and education trust for Burmese people.

One of the most inspiring deaf or deafblind women is Helen Keller. Even today, her story fascinates people. Imagine that she couldn't see these words or hear them spoken. But see could still talk, write, read, and make friends. In fact, you went to college, wrote nearly a dozen books, traveled all over the world, met 12 U.S. presidents, and lived to be 87. Well, there was such a person, her name is Helen Keller and she was born over a hundred years ago! Helen Keller was an American lecturer, author, and activist. Deaf and blind since early childhood, and living in an era where most individuals similarly afflicted were consigned to an asylum. She overcame the adversity of being blind and deaf to become one of the 20th century's leading humanitarians.

Helen Adams Keller was born on 27 June 1880 in Tuscumbia, a small rural town in Northwest Alabama, USA. The daughter of Captain Arthur Henley Keller and Kate Adams Keller she was born with full sight and hearing. Helen Keller at the age of 19 months,(not quite 2 years old) was a happy, healthy child. She was already saying a few words. But Helen's life was to change dramatically. In February 1882. she fell ill. The doctors of the time called it "brain fever", whilst modern day doctors think it may have been scarlet fever or meningitis.

An unidentified illness took her hearing and sight when she was only 19 months old. After losing both, she became wild and uncontrollable due to her inability to communicate and learn. She became very frustrated trying to speak and be understood. Helen never brushed her hair, threw objects, walked around eating off people's plates, and even locked her mother in the pantry. Helen's family was desperate for help and hired Anne Sullivan as a private tutor. Almost as well known as Helen Keller is the work of Anne Sullivan, who became her teacher in 1887, working in a role that today is known as an intervenor. Helen finally learned that things have names when Sullivan had the famous "water" breakthrough, fingerspelling "water" into Helen's hand and pumping water for Helen to feel.

I cannot remember how I felt when the light went out of my eyes. I suppose I felt it was always night and perhaps I wondered why the day did not come. --Helen Keller

How Miss Sullivan turned the uncontrolled child into a responsible human being and succeeded in awakening and stimulating her marvelous mind is familiar to millions. Miss Sullivan began her task with a doll that the children at Perkins had made for her to take to Helen. By spelling "d-o-l-l" into the child's hand, she hoped to teach her to connect objects with letters. Miss Sullivan started to draw water and put Helen's hand under the spout. As the cool water gushed over one hand, she spelled into the other hand the word "w-a-t-e-r" first slowly, then rapidly. Suddenly, the signals had meaning in Helen's mind. She knew that "water" meant the wonderful cool substance flowing over her hand. Quickly, she stopped and touched the earth and demanded its letter name and by nightfall she had learned 30 words.

I saw clearly that it was useless to try to teach her language or anything else until she learned to obey me. I have thought about it a great deal, and the more I think, the more certain I am that obedience is the gateway through which knowledge, yes, and love, too, enter the mind of a child. --Anne Sullivan

Helen attended Perkins School for the Blind with Anne, where she learned quickly and had an exceptional memory for details. It was there where she was known as "Miracle Child." Keller became an excellent student and eventually attended Radcliffe College, where she graduated with honors in 1904. Helen Keller progressed with language quickly under Anne Sullivan's tutorage. She learned Braille at the Perkins Institution and learned to speak at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf. She spent the rest of her life traveling the world and lecturing and raising money for the handicapped. She wrote a book about her life, and the play "The Miracle Worker" by William Gibson, won the Pulitzer Prize and was later a movie.

Helen Keller wrote her autobiography, publishing The Story of My Life (1903) and Midstream: My Later Life (1929) as well as publishing several other books, including The Practice of Optimism (1903, 1915), My Religion (1927), and Teacher, Anne Sullivan Macy: A Tribute by the Foster Child of her Mind (1955).

Helen Keller was, for a time, the most famous handicapped person in the world. During her lifetime Keller was regarded as one of America's most inspirational figures.
For the rest of her life, Helen Keller worked for improving education for the blind, deaf, and mute. She traveled and lectured extensively. Despite her retirement from public life, Helen Keller was not forgotten. Helen Keller was an inspiration to everyone, with or without disabilities. She will always be remembered as a hero to many people throughout the world bringing light and hope to everyone. She wound up visiting 39 countries on five different continents! Helen also inspired many works of art, including two Oscar-winning movies, and received dozens of awards, such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that an American civilian can receive. Helen Keller, the little girl, became one of history's remarkable women. She dedicated her life to improving the conditions of blind and the deaf-blind around the world

Helen died on June 1, 1968 in Westport, Connecticut. A service was held in her honor at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and her ashes were placed there next to her constant companions, Anne Sullivan and Polly Thompson.

Japan was devastated by 8.9 on the Richter scale magnitude earthquake unleashing 13 foot tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland and prompting a "nuclear emergency" at 2.46pm J.S.T on March 11, 2011. The north coast of Japan was hit by a horrible tsunami after a 8.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred 80 miles offshore. Many people died estimated around 1000 and 11000 headcounts were transferred to evacuation centers. Recent analysis of historical data shows that four of the top ten most deadly earthquakes and tsunamis since 1701 occurred in the last decade, including the 2004 Indian Ocean (Sumatra) and 2010 Haiti events. The Japan earthquake hit 125 kilometres off the eastern coast and has set off a tsunami. Officials state that waves as high as 20 feet could hit the coast.

The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along a 1300-mile (2100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter.

The quake shook a devastating tsunami that swept the entire agricultural fields and the cities. Walls of water relocated themselves to the city and destroyed it completely. Television images showed waves of more than 12 feet roaring inland. The wave drew a line of white fury across the ocean, heading toward the shoreline. Cars and trucks were still moving on highways as the water rushed toward them. The floodwaters, thick with floating debris shoved inland, pushed aside heavy trucks as if they were children's toys, in some places carrying blazing buildings towards factories, fields, highways, bridges and homes.

President of United state Barack Obama said he was heartbroken by images of devastation in Japan following Friday’s deadly earthquake and tsunami, and pledged U.S. assistance to help the country recover. Our hearts go out to our friends in Japan and across the region, and we’re going to stand with them as they recover and rebuild from this tragedy, Obama said during a White House news conference.

World War II

During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States conducted two atomic bombings against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, the first on August 6, 1945 and the second on August 9, 1945.

After bombing on Hiroshima - Japanese officials determined that 69% of Hiroshima's buildings were destroyed and another 6–7% damaged. 70,000–80,000 people, or some 30% of the population of Hiroshima were killed immediately, and another 70,000 injured. Over 90% of the doctors and 93% of the nurses in Hiroshima were killed or injured—most had been in the downtown area which received the greatest damage.

After bombing on Nagasaki - The resulting explosion had a blast yield equivalent to 21 kilotons of TNT . The explosion generated heat estimated at 3,900 degrees Celsius (4,200 K, 7,000 °F) and winds that were estimated at 1005 km/h. Casualty estimates for immediate deaths range from 40,000 to 75,000. Total deaths by the end of 1945 may have reached 80,000. At least eight known POWs died from the bombing and as many as 13 POWs may have died.

After the World War II (Hiroshima & Nagasaki) Japan postwar economic recovery was nothing short of remarkable.New technologies and manufacturing were undertaken with great success. A shrewd trade policy gave Japan larger shares in many Western markets, an imbalance that caused some tensions with the U.S. The close involvement of Japanese government in the country's banking and industry produced accusations of protectionism. Yet economic growth continued through the 1970s and 1980s, eventually making Japan the world's second-largest economy (after the U.S.).

Japan later achieved rapid growth to become the second-largest economy in the world. This ended in the mid-1990s when Japan suffered a major recession. In the beginning of the 21st century, positive growth has signaled a gradual economic recovery. Japan is a major economic power. Japan has the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP and by purchasing power parity. According to both UN and WHO estimates, Japan has the longest life expectancy of any country in the world. The invantion of the aerial age - The Wright brothers

People had dreamed of flying for many years. The United States Army was trying to develop an airplane in 1903, but the plane wouldn't fly. The New York Times wrote that maybe in 1 million to 10 million years they might be able to make a plane that would fly. Only eight days later Wilbur Wright and his younger brother, Orville. were successful in flying the first manned plane airplane and it had stayed in the air for 12 seconds 120 feet (37 meters) ! The brothers made three more flights that day. The longest, by Wilbur, was 852 feet (260 meters) in 59 seconds. Only five people were there to see the flights, and very few newspapers even wrote a story about it.

The Wright brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912), were two Americans credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane. The Wright house provided an excellent setting for the children's intellectual and creative development. Orville wrote of his childhood: "We were lucky enough to grow up in an environment where there was always much encouragement to children to pursue intellectual interests; to investigate whatever aroused curiosity."

Both brothers attended high school, but did not receive diplomas. The family's abrupt move in 1884 from Richmond, Indiana to Dayton (where the family had lived during the 1870s) prevented Wilbur from receiving his diploma after finishing four years of high school. They did not go to college, the brothers had intuitive technical ability. Before building their airplane, they had built a printing press and operated a bicycle repair and sales shop. They constructed their own bicycles. The profits from their bicycle business funded their airplane-building venture.

Idea's of Flying

In the late 1800s, the world’s leading scientists were trying to construct a machine that could soar above the earth. One by one these brilliant scientists failed, some even falling to their deaths, victims of their own winged contraptions. So, how could Orville and Wilbur even think of succeeding when no one else could?

But succeed they did. This is the story of their life, the risks they took, despite the multiple failures, and their unwillingness to accept defeat. This is the story of how the Wright Brothers find a way to change the world for the better.

In 1878 their father, who traveled often as a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, brought home a toy "helicopter" for his two younger sons. The device was based on an invention of French aeronautical pioneer Alphonse Pénaud. Made of paper, bamboo and cork with a rubber band to twirl its rotor, it was about a foot long. Wilbur and Orville played with it until it broke, and then built their own. Orville and Wilbur Wright became convinced that the possibility of powered, sustained, controlled flight of an airplane was more than mere fantasy. By 1900 they had built a machine that they believed would fly. The brothers' first glider, tested in 1900, failed to fly. A second trial in 1901 fared better, but they went on the improve the design. Later that year, the brothers built a wind tunnel in which they tested over 200 wing and airframe designs. This resulted in a successful glider model.

Undeterred, a wind tunnel was built in order to work out the correct lift data required for such an aircraft. Whilst experimenting in the wind tunnel they discovered that longer, narrower wings were more effective. Combined with their earlier discovery concerning roll, pitch, and yaw, which effectively controlled the aircraft, they had arrived at a winning combination. On December 17, 1903 Orville took off in "The Flyer' and controlled it in the air for twelve seconds. Feverish alterations were made and by 1905, thirty-minute flights had been achieved. Twelve months later they had received their patent for the "˜Wright Flying Machine'.

The Wrights believed that airplanes would eventually be used to transport passengers and mail. When the Wrights first offered their machine to the U.S. government, they were not taken seriously, but by 1908 they closed a contract with the U.S. Department of War for the first military airplane.

Wilbur Wright

Neither brother married. Wilbur once quipped that he "did not have time for both a wife and an airplane." He became ill on a trip to Boston in April 1912. After returning to Dayton, he was diagnosed with typhoid fever. He lingered in and out of consciousness for several weeks until he died, at age 45, in the Wright family home on May 30. His father Milton wrote about Wilbur in his diary: "A short life, full of consequences. An unfailing intellect, imperturbable temper, great self-reliance and as great modesty, seeing the right clearly, pursuing it steadfastly, he lived and died."

Orville Wright

Orville succeeded to the presidency of the Wright company upon Wilbur's death. Orville made his last flight as a pilot in 1918 in a 1911 Model B. He retired from business and became an elder statesman of aviation, serving on various official boards and committees, including the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), predecessor agency to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce (ACCA), predecessor to the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). Orville was elected to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in New York City in 1965.

Orville died on January 30, 1948 after his second heart attack, having lived from the horse-and-buggy age to the dawn of supersonic flight.

A pioneer in the field of telecommunications, Alexander Graham Bell was born into a family with a passion for communication. on March 3 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was educated at the Edinburgh high school and Edinburgh University, receiving special training in his father's system for removing impediments in speech. He only attended school for five years; from the time he was ten until he was fourteen, but he never stopped learning. He read the books in his grandfather's library and studied tutorials. Upon leaving school, Bell travelled to London to live with his grandfather, Alexander Bell.

Young Aleck surmised that his mother would be able to "hear" him through the vibrations his vocal intonations would make. This early insight would prove significant as Alexander Graham Bell went on to develop more elaborate theories regarding the characteristics of sound waves.

When Bell began experimenting with electrical signals, the telegraph had been an established means of communication for some 30 years. Although a highly successful system, the telegraph, with its dot-and-dash Morse code, was basically limited to receiving and sending one message at a time. Bell's extensive knowledge of the nature of sound and his understanding of music enabled him to conjecture the possibility of transmitting multiple messages over the same wire at the same time. Although the idea of a multiple telegraph had been in existence for some time, Bell offered his own musical or harmonic approach as a possible practical solution. His "harmonic telegraph" was based on the principle that several notes could be sent simultaneously along the same wire if the notes or signals differed in pitch.

Bell's ideas about transmitting speech electrically came into sharper focus during his days in Boston. As he read extensively on physics and devotedly attended lectures on science and technology. Drawing parallels between multiple message and multiple notes in a musical chord, Bell arrived at his idea of the "harmonic telegraph." From this idea sprang the invention that made him immortal among inventors--the telephone.

The chance meeting between Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson at the electrical machine shop of Charles Williams was one of the most fortuitous in technological history. Thomas Watson became an associate of Bell. He made parts and built models of Bell's inventions. One day while they were working Bell accidently heard the sound of a plucked reed coming over the telegraph wire. Watson had been tuning the metal reeds in the next room. Bell drew up a plan for the telephone and they continued to experiment. The next day he transmitted the famous words, "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you!" A few months later on Feb. 14, 1876, he applied for a patent on his telephone.

The range of Bell's inventive genius is represented only in part by the 18 patents granted in his name alone and the 12 he shared with his collaborators. These included 14 for the telephone and telegraph, four for the photophone, one for the phonograph, five for aerial vehicles, four for hydroairplanes, and two for a selenium cell. On 14 February 1876, Elisha Gray filed a patent caveat for a telephone on the very same day in 1876 as did Bell's lawyer. The water transmitter described in Gray's caveat was strikingly similar to Bell's telephone transmitter, a fact which raised questions about whether Bell was inspired by Gray's design or vice versa.

Bell is also credited with the invention of the metal detector in 1881. The device was quickly put together in an attempt to find the bullet in the body of U.S. President James Garfield.

Once touted as the largest known diamond in the world, Kohinoor has always been the object of admiration, reason for pride and the answer for the connoisseurs of beauty. Kohinoor, which means "Mountain of Light" in Urdu, had a famed journey ever since its origin. This diamond was never bought nor sold and it has always altered its location from one dynasty to another and from one epoch to other.

The Kohinoor Diamond is one of the most famous diamonds in the world. The Kohinoor diamond was first mentioned in 1306 when it was taken from a Rajah of Malwa, whose family had held the diamond for centuries.The Kohinoor diamond belonged to various Indian and Persian rulers but it became part of the Crown Jewels of England at the time that Queen Victoria was proclaimed empress of India. The Kohinoor was re-cut at this time and now weighs 108.93 carats and is kept in the Tower of London.

Many legends say that the Koh-i-noor was mined in India, and at least 4,000 years old. It received a mention in the 1300s, when it was named in the Baburnama.One account states that Babur got his hands on the diamond in Gujarat; another says he got it in the Deccan.But when Babur came to Agra in May 1526, the ruler Vikramaditya most likely gave him the great diamond.

The final owner was Maharaja Duleep Singh. in the backdrop of the two Sikh Wars leading to the annexation of the Punjab by the British.The hoisting of British flag was on March 29th, 1849 Lahore where Punjab was formally proclaimed a part of the British Empire in India. One of the terms of the Treaty of Lahore was:- "The gem called the Koh-i-noor which was taken from Shah Shuja-ul-Mulk by Maharajah Ranjit Singh shall be surrendered by the Maharajah of Lahore to the Queen of England.

The Koh-i-Noor diamond was then given by Dalip Singh as Maharaja Ranjit Singh's successor (who had owned it) to Queen Victoria. Indian historians argue that Prince Dalip Singh was only a minor then, and could not have given the diamond away without coercion from his British advisors. The record also says that the confiscated diamond was presented to the Queen by Lord Dalhousie in 1850 through the young exiled Prince.

Prince Albert (Prince Consort) and Sebastian Garrard stated that the Koh-i-noor was badly cut, it is rose-not-brilliant-cut Prince Albert, and the technical direction of James Tennanthe diamond was cut from 186 1/16 carats (37.21 g) to its current 105.602 carats (21.61 g) to increase its brilliance.The re-cutting took 38 days and cost £8000 ($40,000). The final result was an oval brilliant diamond weighing 108.93 metric carats, which meant a loss of weight of just under 43 per cent.

After Queen Victoria's death it was set in Queen Alexandra's brand new diamond crown, with which she was crowned at the coronation of her husband, King Edward VII. Queen Alexandra was the first Queen Consort to use the diamond in her crown, followed by Queen Mary and then Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. In 2002, the crown rested atop her coffin as she lay in state.

The earliest record of Koh-i-noor diamond gives us a fair idea that this exclusive piece of jewel actually weighed 240 karats. Hortensio Borgio, an Kohinoor diamond is safely housed in the Crown Jewels section of the Tower of London, which is a World Heritage Site and museum.

In the 20th century there was further controversy surrounding the Koh-I-Noor, namely the question of its rightful ownership. In 1947 the government of India asked for the return of the Koh-I-Noor: at the same time the Congress Ministry of Orissa claimed that the stone actually belonged to the god Jaganath, despite the opinion of Ranjit Singh's treasurer that it was property of the state. Another request followed in 1953, the year of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. But the really fight erupted in 1976 when the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, in a letter to the British Prime Minister, James Callaghan, submitted a formal request for the return of the diamond to Pakistan. This was refused but was accompanied by an assurance by Callaghan to Bhutto that there was no question that Britain would have handed it over to any other country.
